ESIC IP Number
A 10-digit Insurance Person number assigned by ESIC to every employee covered under the ESI scheme. It stays with the worker for life and is used to claim medical and cash benefits.
What is ESIC IP Number?
The ESIC Insurance Person (IP) number is a unique 10-digit identifier issued by the Employees' State Insurance Corporation when an employee earning ₹21,000 or less per month (₹25,000 for persons with disability) is registered under the ESI Act, 1948. The number is generated when the employer files the new joiner's details on the ESIC portal within 10 days of joining. It is permanent and portable: an IP number stays the same across job changes and even periods of unemployment. Using the IP number, the worker and dependents can avail medical benefit at ESI dispensaries and hospitals, sickness benefit (70% of wages for 91 days a year), maternity benefit (26 weeks at full wages), disablement benefit, dependants benefit on death, funeral expenses (₹15,000), and unemployment allowance under Rajiv Gandhi Shramik Kalyan Yojana. The IP number is printed on the Pehchan Card.
Example
Lakshmi joins a Chennai garment unit at ₹18,000/month. The employer registers her on ESIC portal in 7 days. She receives IP number 1234567890 and a Pehchan Card for use at the local ESI hospital.
How ESIC IP Number is used
Capture IP number in HRMS at onboarding. When the employee resigns, share the IP number so the next employer can map the same record without creating a duplicate.
