Probation Period

Initial 3-6 month trial period after joining where the employer assesses fit and either side can exit with shorter notice.

What is Probation Period?

A probation period is the trial window at the start of employment, usually 3 to 6 months in Indian companies, when the employer evaluates whether a new hire is the right fit for the role. During this time, notice periods are shorter (often 15 days versus 60-90 days post-confirmation), and termination is easier on both sides. Once the probation ends and the employee is confirmed in writing, the full appointment letter terms kick in. Some companies extend probation by another 1-3 months if performance feedback is mixed, but this should always be communicated in writing with specific improvement areas.

How Probation Period is used

HR teams track probation end dates and trigger confirmation reviews 2 weeks before completion. Without a written confirmation, the employee is technically still on probation, which can cause confusion at exit.

Probation Period FAQs

Can probation be extended in India?

Yes, if the offer or appointment letter allows it. Most companies extend by 1-3 months with written notice and specific feedback. Indefinite extension is risky and can be challenged.

What is the notice period during probation?

Typically 15 days or 1 month, much shorter than the 60-90 days post-confirmation. Check the appointment letter for the exact clause.

Are PF and gratuity counted during probation?

PF starts from day one of joining, including probation. Gratuity needs 5 years of continuous service, and probation months count toward that total.
