ECR (Electronic Challan cum Return)
Monthly electronic return filed on the EPFO unified portal that combines employee-wise PF and EPS contribution details with the payment challan. Due by the 15th of the next month.
What is ECR (Electronic Challan cum Return)?
Electronic Challan cum Return, or ECR, is the monthly EPF filing on the EPFO Unified Member Portal. Employers upload a text file containing UAN, member name, gross wages, EPF wages, EPS wages, EDLI wages, employee 12% contribution, employer 3.67% PF + 8.33% EPS contributions, NCP days, and refund of advances. After upload, the portal validates and generates a Temporary Return Reference Number (TRRN), against which the employer pays via internet banking or NEFT/RTGS. The due date is the 15th of the following month (e.g., March wages by 15th April). Late deposit attracts interest at 12% p.a. under Section 7Q and damages at 5% to 25% under Section 14B. ECR replaced the earlier paper Form 5, Form 10, and Form 12A, making EPF compliance fully digital from 2012 onwards.
Example
For wages of March 2026, the employer uploads ECR by 12th April with UAN-wise data, generates TRRN ₹4,80,000, and pays via SBI net banking before the 15th April deadline.
How ECR (Electronic Challan cum Return) is used
Run payroll, export ECR text file from your HRMS, upload to EPFO portal, generate TRRN, and pay before the 15th. Save the Payment Confirmation Receipt.
