Shift Allowance
Extra pay for working night, evening, or odd-hour shifts, common in IT, BPO, and manufacturing, typically ₹100-500 per shift.
What is Shift Allowance?
Shift Allowance is a fixed cash benefit paid to employees who work non-standard hours, night shifts, evening shifts, or rotational schedules that fall outside the regular 9-to-6 window. It's common in IT services, BPOs handling US/UK clients, manufacturing units running multiple shifts, hospitals, and call centres. Typical amounts range from ₹100 to ₹500 per shift, with some senior or skilled roles getting up to ₹1,000. Shift allowance is fully taxable as part of salary income and forms part of the monthly payroll. It's separate from overtime, OT pays for extra hours, while shift allowance pays for working unsociable hours regardless of duration. Some companies also offer transport, meal vouchers, or stay-back cabs for night-shift employees, especially women, in line with state safety guidelines.
Example
A BPO agent on a 9 PM to 6 AM US shift earns a base salary plus ₹350 per night-shift attended. For 22 night shifts in a month, the shift allowance = ₹7,700, added to monthly gross.
How Shift Allowance is used
Payroll calculates shift allowance based on attendance logs, multiplying eligible shifts by the per-shift rate and adding it to the monthly gross salary.
