Background Verification (BGV)

Pre-joining check of ID, address, education, prior employment, and criminal record, usually done by an external agency.

What is Background Verification (BGV)?

Background Verification, or BGV, is the process of validating what a candidate has claimed in their CV and offer paperwork. A typical BGV in India covers PAN and Aadhaar verification, current and permanent address checks, education certificates with the issuing university, prior employment via the last 1-3 employers' HR, and a criminal record check through court records. The check usually takes 7-21 days. Common agencies are AuthBridge, First Advantage, OnGrid, and SecUR Credentials. If a discrepancy is found (fake degree, hidden short stint, undisclosed termination), the offer can be withdrawn or, if joining has happened, the appointment can be terminated for misrepresentation. Honest gaps explained upfront rarely cause issues. Hidden ones almost always do.

How Background Verification (BGV) is used

Trigger BGV the moment the offer is accepted, not after joining. Catching issues post-joining is messy and damages team trust.

Background Verification (BGV) FAQs

What if my BGV finds a small discrepancy?

Minor mismatches (slightly different dates, different address format) are usually clarified with a quick email. Material lies (fake degree, hidden termination) lead to offer withdrawal.

How long does BGV take in India?

7-21 days typically. Education and court checks take longest. Address and prior employer verification finish in a few days.

Do I have to consent to BGV?

Yes. The offer letter includes a consent clause and you sign a separate authorisation form. Without consent, the offer is usually rescinded.
